The broad church of British hip-hop: bars in a British accent over boom-bap, garage-tinged or soulful beats, with slang, council-estate detail and dry humour foregrounded. Less polished than US rap, more conversational and observational, ranging from Skinnyman's social realism to Roots Manuva's dubwise swagger and chart-topping modern crossover.
History
British rap predates grime, building from 1980s acts and crystallising in the late 1990s/2000s once MCs leaned into local accents rather than mimicking America. Roots Manuva's Run Come Save Me (2001) and The Streets' Original Pirate Material (2002) proved a distinct national voice could land critically and commercially, seeding everything that followed.
