UK Oi! is the original British form of Oi!: pub-ready punk riffs, terrace chants, working-class vocals and songs that often feel like slogans shouted from a street corner. It is rooted in late-1970s Britain, with unemployment, football culture, skinhead style, class resentment and tabloid moral panic all shaping its meaning. The sound is usually direct and mid-tempo, built for fists-in-the-air choruses rather than technical speed.
History
UK Oi! emerged after the first punk explosion, when bands such as Sham 69, Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts and The 4-Skins spoke more directly to working-class youth than art-punk or new wave did. Blitz, The Business, Infa-Riot and The Last Resort extended the template into the early 1980s. Compilations, press controversy and street violence made the scene infamous, but the records also became a global template for later street punk.
