UK Garage, often shortened to UKG, is the central British garage style that blends house swing, R&B vocals, jungle bass pressure, MC culture, and sharply syncopated drums. It includes 4x4, speed garage, 2-step, vocal garage, and many revival forms, so the tag works as both a specific late-1990s sound and a broader lineage. The feel is stylish and kinetic: bass-heavy enough for clubs, songful enough for radio, and flexible enough to generate grime, dubstep, bassline, and UK funky.
History
UKG rose from London clubs and pirate radio in the mid-1990s, then crossed into mainstream pop around 1999-2001. Its golden era produced smooth records like MJ Cole's "Sincere" and Sweet Female Attitude's "Flowers," rougher club pressure like Double 99's "RipGroove," and chart moments such as Artful Dodger and DJ Pied Piper. After media backlash and scene fragmentation, UKG's DNA reappeared in grime, dubstep, bassline, UK funky, future garage, and 2020s revival pop.
