UK Asian Underground was a British South Asian club and album scene mixing tabla, sitar, Bollywood memory, qawwali, bhangra, dub, jungle, drum and bass, trip-hop, hip-hop and political spoken word. It emerged from second-generation identity and anti-racist cultural work as much as from sound design. The scene's music could be meditative, militant, cinematic or club-heavy, often challenging narrow ideas of Britishness.
History
Clubs such as Anokha and labels/compilations around Outcaste, Nation and related networks helped the scene cohere in the 1990s. Talvin Singh's Mercury Prize-winning OK, Nitin Sawhney's Beyond Skin, Asian Dub Foundation's Rafi's Revenge and Cornershop's chart success gave the movement visibility. The label eventually became limiting, but its influence runs through British Asian electronic, grime-adjacent and global club cultures.
