Two-Tone

Two-Tone is the British ska revival that fused Jamaican ska and rocksteady with punk-era urgency, new-wave concision and explicit multiracial identity. The sound is crisp, danceable and socially alert: clipped guitar upstrokes, organ, horn lines, walking bass and vocals that can be celebratory one moment and grimly political the next. The black-and-white checkerboard aesthetic made the music's anti-racist message visible before a note was played.
History
Jerry Dammers founded 2 Tone Records in Coventry, making The Specials the movement's center and bringing The Selecter, Madness, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers into a national conversation. The label drew from Prince Buster, Toots and the Maytals and Jamaican ska, but its late-1970s British context made songs about unemployment, racism and urban tension feel immediate. Two-Tone's influence later reached ska-punk, Britpop, indie dance and anti-racist punk organizing.
