Two-Step Country

Two-step country is honky-tonk built explicitly for the country two-step dance — a brisk, even 4/4 with a driving backbeat at roughly 170–190 beats per minute that propels couples around the floor. The sound features bright electric Telecaster lead, pedal steel, fiddle, and a snappy snare, with upbeat, often playful vocals. The mood is celebratory and kinetic rather than mournful. Its signature is the steady, dance-friendly tempo and the "quick-quick-slow-slow" rhythmic clarity that makes the beat easy to follow on a crowded floor.

History

While the two-step as a dance predates country, two-step country as a marketed sound matured in the Texas and Oklahoma dancehalls and crystallized during the 1980 "Urban Cowboy" boom, when Gilley's and the broader Texas dancehall scene made up-tempo two-step numbers commercial gold. Bob Wills' Western swing supplied the rhythmic ancestry, but it was George Strait whose run of dancefloor anthems — "The Fireman," "Cowboys Like Us," and countless others — defined modern two-step country in the 1980s and 1990s. Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn ("Boot Scootin' Boogie") industrialized it for the line-dance era.
