Deliberately sweet, soft-edged indie pop: thin jangly guitars, childlike melodies, breathy boy-girl vocals, hand-claps and glockenspiel, and unashamedly tender, bookish lyrics. Anti-macho and fey by design, it prizes innocence and melody over volume. Cardigan-warm, lo-fi production wraps wistful, sometimes wryly subversive songs.
History
Springing from Britain's C86 cassette and Sarah Records around 1986, twee began with Talulah Gosh's amateurish charm. It matured through Heavenly and, in the late '90s, Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura, who brought literate sophistication and wider acclaim. The aesthetic later seeded a 2000s American twee revival.
