History
Television embraced the musical early with Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (CBS, 1957) and countless variety specials, but the modern boom arrived with Ryan Murphy's Glee (2009-2015), whose cover-single model turned the TV musical into a chart machine. Around it grew genuinely original works — Rachel Bloom's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019), Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Apple's Schmigadoon! — plus a run of live network broadcasts (The Sound of Music Live!, Grease: Live). The one-off musical episode, from Cop Rock to Buffy's "Once More, with Feeling," became a prestige set-piece; together these kept show-writing craft alive on TV and funneled talent between Broadway, pop and streaming.
