Trot is Korean popular song built on a distinctive duple rhythm, dramatic vibrato, easy singalong hooks and lyrics about love, heartbreak, family, perseverance and nostalgia. It shares space with older popular song, Japanese colonial-era influence, Korean theater, radio balladry and later television spectacle. Modern trot can sound retro, kitschy, sincere or arena-sized, but the vocal curve and emotional directness remain central.

History

Trot developed during Korea's early recording era and was reshaped by liberation, war, television and nightclub culture. Lee Mi-ja, Nam Jin, Na Hoon-a, Joo Hyun-mi, Tae Jin-ah and Song Dae-kwan defined different eras of the form. In the 2000s and especially after televised competitions, younger stars and idol-adjacent performers reintroduced trot to new audiences without removing its older sentimental core.
