Tropical Country

Tropical Country foregrounds island mood more explicitly than generic beach-country, often using steel-drum timbre, lighter percussion, Caribbean harmonic turns, and lyrics about palms, rum, and latitude. It is country on vacation, preferably where the dress code is flip-flops and poor impulse control.

History

Buffett's songbook is the fountainhead, but mainstream country made the style more legible in the 2000s through Chesney, Zac Brown Band, and allied summer-cycle hits. Its longevity comes from being both escapist fantasy and seasonal programming gold.
