Trip-Hop is slow, sample-based electronic music where hip-hop beats, dub bass, soul vocals, noir atmosphere, and studio collage become cinematic pop. It favors heavy breakbeats, minor-key strings, turntable scratches, smoky singing or rapping, and a sense of urban melancholy. The style can be sensual, paranoid, jazzy, or orchestral, but it usually moves with a head-nod rather than a club stomp.

History

Trip-Hop is most associated with Bristol, where Massive Attack, Portishead, and Tricky turned sound-system culture, hip-hop, post-punk, dub, and soul into a shadowy 1990s language. DJ Shadow, UNKLE, Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps, Lamb, Archive, Hooverphonic, and later cinematic beatmakers widened the sound beyond Bristol. Its influence remains strong in alternative R&B, downtempo, film music, moody pop, and sample-based electronic production.
