Trap drums and 808s fused with rock and pop-punk instrumentation: electric and acoustic guitars, live drum textures and anthemic, sung-rapped hooks. Less abrasive than trap-metal, it leans melodic and emotive, pairing trap's rhythm with rock chord progressions and stadium-sized, radio-friendly choruses.

History

Foreshadowed by Yelawolf's guitar-driven Southern rap-rock (2014-15), the style took shape as melodic trap artists embraced guitars and pop-punk in the late 2010s. Trippie Redd's rock projects (including the Travis Barker-produced Neon Shark vs Pegasus), Machine Gun Kelly's pop-punk pivot, and guitar-led singles from iann dior and The Kid LAROI pushed trap-rock mainstream through the early 2020s.
