Aggressive fusion of trap rhythm with heavy metal abrasion: loud, heavily distorted 808 bass, raw minimal mixing, and screamed, growled or shouted vocals, sometimes over sampled or live guitar riffs. Lyrics venture into violent, dark and occult territory. The energy is punishing and mosh-ready, built to sound deliberately ugly.
History
Emerged from the mid-to-late-2010s SoundCloud rap scene as artists like Bones, Sybyr and XXXTentacion broke conventions by mashing trap with metal. Scarlxrd's screamed HEART ATTACK, Ghostemane's blackened death-rap and City Morgue's punk-trap chaos defined the style, which crossed into rock festival circuits by the late 2010s.
