Traditional Bluegrass
Traditional bluegrass is the foundational form codified by Bill Monroe: acoustic five-string banjo (Scruggs three-finger style), fiddle, mandolin, flat-top guitar, and slapped upright bass with no drums or amplification. The feel is brisk and driving, anchored by the mandolin chop on the offbeat, with instrumental breaks passed around the band. Vocals are high and piercing, with two-, three-, and four-part harmonies built around a high tenor over the lead — the purist's blueprint that all later styles measure themselves against.
History
The style was born in 1946 when Monroe's Blue Grass Boys recorded for Columbia with Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, fixing the instrumentation and arrangement template that defined the genre. The Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys, Reno & Smiley, and Jimmy Martin extended the model through the 1950s, each adding signature touches — Martin's "good 'n' country" timing, the Stanleys' mournful mountain harmonies. Traditional bluegrass became the conservative reference point against which progressive variants reacted, and remains rigorously preserved today by acts like the Del McCoury Band and countless festival ensembles who keep the single-mic, no-drums aesthetic alive.
