Third-Wave Ska is the 1990s ska boom, especially in North America, where ska rhythm mixed with punk, alternative rock, pop, funk and college-radio humor. Horn sections, upbeat tempos, checkerboard graphics and big choruses made it instantly recognizable. It ranges from polished radio hits to DIY punk bands, but the common thread is ska as a modern band format rather than a strict Jamaican revival.
History
The third wave grew from 1980s ska scenes, Operation Ivy's punk influence and regional U.S. circuits before breaking through with No Doubt, Sublime, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger, Save Ferris and Buck-O-Nine. Labels, Warped Tour and alternative radio turned ska into a visible youth style. After backlash and oversaturation, the scene contracted, but its songs stayed durable because they were built for dancing, horns and huge choruses.
