Rock as staged drama: narrative concept pieces, character costuming, mime and elaborate sets turn the concert into theatre. Music swings from bombastic mini-operas and dynamic builds to spoken-word interludes, with grandiose vocals and orchestral or operatic flourishes. The song serves a story or persona rather than a singles-chart hook.
History
Grew from Peter Gabriel's costumed, story-driven Genesis shows and the operatic ambitions of Queen in the early 70s, then peaked with Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf's cinematic Bat Out of Hell (1977). Klaus Nomi pushed the operatic-alien extreme. Its grand-narrative impulse later shaped rock musicals and stadium concept tours.
