Text-Sound Composition turns spoken language into composed sonic process. Repeated phrases, tape loops, phasing, room resonance, electronic delay and cut-up editing make words slide from intelligible speech into rhythm, texture and acoustic pattern. It sits between documentary, poetry and composition: the source text matters, but the transformation of speech into pulse or environment is the main event.
History
The style grew from musique concrète, sound poetry, radio art and tape composition. Steve Reich's It's Gonna Rain and Come Out showed how documentary speech could become pulse and phase; Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room made a spoken text disappear into room resonance; Charles Amirkhanian, Åke Hodell and the Swedish text-sound scene explored speech as musical structure. Its influence reaches sound art, sampling, documentary composition and experimental hip-hop.
