Texas Shuffle is the state’s signature rolling groove: swung eighths, pocket-heavy drums, walking or pumping bass, clipped guitar chords, and solos that dance rather than bulldoze. Usually sitting around 90–125 BPM, it feels relaxed on the surface but demands serious rhythmic control underneath.
History
Shuffles were central to Texas club and dance-band blues from the postwar era onward, drawing on jump blues, swing, and roadhouse practicality. T-Bone Walker and Freddie King helped codify the guitar feel, and the Vaughan/Fabulous Thunderbirds generation brought the format back to mass attention in the 1980s.
