Teen Pop Era

The late-'90s/early-2000s explosion of glossy, choreographed teen idols: punchy four-on-the-floor and shuffle beats, bright synth pads, processed harmonies, and big sing-along choruses engineered by Swedish hitmakers. Wholesome-to-flirty lyrics, TRL-ready hooks and squeaky-clean production aimed squarely at adolescents.
History
After the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears broke huge in 1998-99, labels flooded the market with teen acts, many shaped by Max Martin and Cheiron Studios in Stockholm. MTV's Total Request Live became the genre's nerve center. Oversaturation and a turn toward edgier 'mature' reinventions cooled the wave by 2003.
