The most orchestral strain of prog: lush Mellotron and string-synth arrangements, classical motifs, soaring multi-keyboard layers and grand dynamic builds that mimic a symphony orchestra. Long-form movements, romantic melody and dramatic crescendos define it. Opulent, cinematic and rich, it is prog at its most majestic and harmonically dense.
History
Developed in the early 1970s as Yes, Genesis and ELP pushed keyboard textures toward orchestral grandeur, often borrowing classical themes outright. The Mellotron became its signature instrument. Camel, Renaissance and Italian acts like PFM extended it; the style enjoyed a 1990s neo-prog revival via bands chasing that symphonic sweep.
