Symphonic Metalcore
Located in 1 route
Symphonic metalcore layers full cinematic orchestration - sweeping strings, choirs, grand piano and bombastic synth brass - over metalcore's melodic riffing, blastbeats and crushing breakdowns. Tempos shift from mid-paced grooves to double-kick gallops, and keyboards carry lead melodies as often as the guitars do. Vocals contrast harsh growls and high shrieks against soaring cleans, sometimes with operatic or female-led passages. The result is grandiose and theatrical: orchestral swells build tension, then drop into pit-ready, downtuned chug. Production is dense and widescreen, balancing symphonic beauty with extreme-metal weight.
History
Symphonic metalcore grew out of the late-2000s deathcore/metalcore boom when bands began running classical orchestration through breakdown-driven songwriting. Southern California's Winds of Plague defined the template with 'Decimate the Weak' (2008), draping keyboardist-led orchestral tapestries over hardcore brutality. Australia's Make Them Suffer took the idea symphonic-deathcore on 'Neverbloom' (2012), pairing grand piano and choirs with blastbeats. Connecticut's Shadow of Intent later refined the orchestral side with film-composer-grade arrangements (collaborating with Fleshgod Apocalypse's Francesco Ferrini) on 'Melancholy' (2019). The style overlaps heavily with symphonic deathcore, but its melodic, clean-chorus wing - and acts like Within the Ruins and the orchestral arc of later Make Them Suffer - keeps it rooted in metalcore's emotional, hook-aware core.
