Swing jazz is defined by elastic four-beat momentum, buoyant ride feel, arranged riffs, and solos that sound both relaxed and intensely propulsive.
History
It crystallized when large jazz ensembles emphasized danceable time, sectional interplay, and riff-based arranging, then exploded nationally through radio, records, and ballroom culture. Its vocabulary still underpins much straight-ahead jazz drumming, bass walking, and big-band writing.
