Swamp Country is humid, loose, and darkly funky: tremolo guitars, slithering bass, slightly behind-the-beat drums, and vocals that feel like they walked barefoot through river mud before the take. The imagery leans toward bayous, backwaters, snakes, heat, and rural Southern menace or humor.
History
It developed where Louisiana, Mississippi, country, blues, rock, and soul rubbed shoulders long enough to stop introducing themselves. Tony Joe White is the central architect, but later artists in southern-rooted country, Americana, and swamp rock kept the feel alive, especially where storytelling met greasy groove.
