History
Early hip-hop used sung hooks, but the format became central through 1990s hip-hop soul, G-funk, Bad Boy, Ruff Ryders, Roc-A-Fella, southern rap and 2000s R&B radio. Nate Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, T-Pain, Akon, Pharrell, Rihanna, Drake, Future and SZA represent different eras of hook power. Auto-Tune and melodic rap later blurred whether the hook singer and rapper had to be separate people at all.
