Street Punk is punk built for speed, slogans and visible subculture: spiked hair, leather, shouted choruses, distorted downstrokes and lyrics about alienation, class, police, scene loyalty and survival. It borrows from Oi!, UK82, anarcho-punk and hardcore, but keeps a simpler, anthemic shape than most hardcore. The sound is designed for group identity: the chorus is often the point, and the look is almost inseparable from the music.
History
Early street punk overlapped with UK82 and Oi!, but the 1990s and 2000s revival made it a distinct global lane. Bands such as The Casualties, The Unseen, Lower Class Brats, A Global Threat, Cheap Sex, Defiance and The Virus revived the mohawks-and-studs image while adding faster drums and American hardcore energy. Rancid provided a more melodic, mainstream-facing branch that carried street-punk imagery and gang-vocal hooks into wider punk culture.
