Storyteller country privileges plot, scene, and sequence, often using simple chord movement and clear verse structure so the narrative remains easy to follow. The singer is part narrator, part actor, and part local gossip columnist with a suspiciously good memory.

History

Narrative song runs deep in country, from ballads and event songs to novelty hits and tragic mini-epics. Midcentury story songs by Marty Robbins, Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, and others gave country one of its most instantly recognizable traits: the ability to make a whole movie happen before the coffee cools.
