Rock built around a complete narrative arc - characters, setting, a turn, sometimes a twist ending. Arrangements are full-band but serve the plot: acoustic and electric guitars, piano, modest strings, dynamics that swell as the story climbs. Vocals are unhurried and front-loaded in the mix, often near-spoken in verses so no plot point is lost. The song is a short film you can hum.
History
Harry Chapin made the form a commercial category with the seven-minute 'Taxi' (1972) and the chart-topping 'Cat's in the Cradle' (1974), proving a rock single could be a self-contained story. Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, and later Don McLean expanded the vocabulary, blending folk roots with full-band rock production and ironic, novelistic plotting.
