The clockwork, brass-and-steam music of retro-futurist Victorian invention, marrying orchestral scoring with the clatter of gears, hammered dulcimer, honky-tonk and prepared piano, banjo, hurdy-gurdy and mechanical percussion to evoke a hand-cranked, oil-and-cog world. It favors ramshackle, waltzing or galloping rhythms, ragtime and folk color threaded through symphonic textures, and a tinkering, playful energy shadowed by industrial grime. Instruments are made to sound antique and slightly broken, as if wound by a spring. The mood is adventurous, eccentric and nostalgic-futuristic—the machine age reimagined with wonder, whimsy and rust.

History

Steampunk scoring lacks a single origin but coalesced through 2000s Victorian-fantastical cinema: Trevor Jones's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), Alexandre Desplat's parallel-world The Golden Compass (2007) and James Newton Howard's clockwork-space Treasure Planet (2002) built the palette of antique-mechanical orchestration. Hans Zimmer's deliberately ramshackle, banjo-and-honky-tonk Sherlock Holmes (2009) became the style's most influential statement, and Howard Shore's Hugo (2011) brought delicate clockwork wonder to a Parisian automaton tale. Junkie XL's Mortal Engines (2018) scaled the aesthetic up to blockbuster size, keeping gear-driven retro-futurism a recognizable scoring mode.
