Glam scaled up for the arena: face paint, costumes and pyro fused to fist-pumping hard-rock riffs and chant-along anthems designed to fill a hockey rink. Big, simple choruses, gang vocals and crunching power chords carry the songs, while fire-breathing, blood-spitting and exploding stage sets turn the concert into a larger-than-life spectacle.
History
KISS defined it from 1974 onward, building a comic-book persona of pyro, platform boots and greasepaint around chant-rock anthems and the breakthrough live album Alive! (1975). Cheap Trick brought power-pop hooks to the arena, while Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot carried the costumed, crowd-roaring spectacle into the early-80s MTV era.
