Speed Garage

Speed Garage is the tough early UKG sound where US garage and house were sped up, basslines became more aggressive, and four-on-the-floor drums were sharpened for UK clubs. It often uses organ bass, diva vocal snippets, rough edits, and sudden low-end drops, creating a bridge between soulful garage and the darker 2-step, bassline, grime, and dubstep mutations that followed. The style is direct and physical, with less pop polish than later chart UKG.
History
The mid-1990s UK garage scene took New York and New Jersey garage records, played them faster, and then produced homegrown tracks that emphasized bass pressure and MC energy. Armand van Helden remixes, Double 99's "RipGroove," 187 Lockdown's "Gunman," Scott Garcia, Tuff Jam, and related white labels defined the moment. Speed garage's mainstream window was brief, but its bass-first approach directly fed northern bassline and helped UK dance music move away from smoother house orthodoxy.
