Spa Piano uses simple chordal motion, ample space between phrases, soft sustain, and reassuring consonance, usually with more warmth than virtuosity. It is easier and gentler than concert-style solo piano, with the melody serving calm atmosphere rather than display.
History
As spas broadened into upscale lifestyle environments, piano offered an elegant, nonverbal centerpiece that could feel soothing without drifting fully into ambient wash; Peter Kater, Bernward Koch, Laura Sullivan, Chad Lawson, Helen Jane Long, and David Lanz all supplied versions of soft, emotionally even piano music that fit lobbies, treatment rooms, and home relaxation equally well.
