History
Long dismissed by coastal gatekeepers, Southern rap broke through via OutKast and No Limit/Cash Money, then conquered the charts through Atlanta's crunk and trap waves of the 2000s. By mid-decade the regional accent, drum programming, and dance sensibility defined mainstream hip-hop, a dominance that never receded.
