The New Orleans strain of sludge: bourbon-soaked, blues-rooted heaviness where downtuned doom riffs lock into a swampy Southern groove. Mid-tempo bounce, feedback grit and emotionally raw, guttural vocals carry hardcore weight but swing with a humid, narcotic drawl. Heavy and filthy, yet groovier and bluesier than its colder Northern cousins.
History
Centered on early-1990s Louisiana, Southern sludge grew from a tight scene sharing members across bands. Crowbar (Kirk Windstein, formed 1990) defined the downtuned NOLA groove; Houma's Acid Bath fused doom with Southern blues and goth; Down (Anselmo, Keenan, Windstein, Bower) brought it to wider audiences via 1995's NOLA, building a lasting Southern heavy legacy.
