Soul-Sample Rap

tagStarted 1996Peak 2000–2006Last big hit still active

Soul-sample rap flips vintage soul and gospel records into warm, chopped loops with emotionally immediate hooks and triumphant lift. The beats often sound nostalgic and aspirational at once—chipmunk soul with an MBA and a church suit.

History

Though soul had always been sampled in rap, this became a defined lane through the late-1990s and 2000s work of Kanye West, Just Blaze, Bink!, and collaborators around Roc-A-Fella and beyond. The style later fed conscious rap, coke rap, pop rap, and modern sample revivals, remaining one of the most beloved ways to make rap feel expensive without losing warmth.
