Soul-Funk Pop
tagStarted 1976Peak 1979-1986Last big hit still active
Where funk's groove meets soul's warmth in a pop frame: a deep, melodic bassline and tight rhythm-guitar pocket support gospel-rooted, emotive lead vocals and lush harmonies. Smoother and more song-led than hard funk, it leans on romantic hooks, horn punctuation, and silky production for a groove that's as tender as it is danceable.
History
Grew from late-70s soul artists adopting funk rhythm sections for crossover hits, with Earth, Wind & Fire and the Commodores blending ballad-soul vocals over funk grooves. Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, and George Benson carried the smoother strain into the 80s, and its DNA persists in modern neo-soul-tinged funk-pop.
