Soft Rock Pop

tagStarted 1976Peak 1978-1984Last big hit 1986

Glossy late-70s and early-80s soft rock built for pop charts: smooth electric guitars, polished session drumming, electric piano, tasteful synth pads, and jazz-tinged chords under a silky lead vocal. Production is immaculate and laid-back, choruses are wide and hummable, and the West Coast 'yacht rock' sheen favors comfort and sophistication over edge or distortion.

History

Took shape in mid-70s Los Angeles as soft pop absorbed studio-musician polish and light jazz harmony. Christopher Cross's 1980 debut and Toto's success defined the peak, with Air Supply and Michael McDonald-era smoothness filling pop and adult radio. The 'yacht rock' label, coined retroactively in 2005, gathered this immaculately produced, breeze-easy band sound.
