Soft Funk Pop brings funk rhythm into polished pop without hardening the surface: slap or syncopated bass, clean rhythm guitar, bright synth stabs, drum machines, horn punches, and smooth lead vocals. Tempos usually run 95–125 BPM, energetic enough to move but too refined to sweat heavily. It is funk with the edges buffed, waxed, and parked outside an expensive café.
History
The style developed from jazz-funk, blue-eyed soul, new pop, and 1980s studio technology, especially in the UK where danceability and sophistication could coexist on pop radio. Level 42, Scritti Politti, The Style Council, Swing Out Sister, Johnny Hates Jazz, Go West, Curiosity Killed the Cat, Hue and Cry, Haircut 100, and ABC made crisp, hook-forward records with funk-derived motion. Soft Funk Pop fed sophisti-pop, acid jazz, dance-pop, smooth city pop revivals, and the late-1980s preference for polished rhythmic pop.
