History
The International Soca Monarch competition, launched in Trinidad in 1993, became carnival's Fantastic Friday centerpiece and shaped two decades of soca songwriting as artists tailored songs for the crown. Superblue's multiple titles, Bunji Garlin's early-2000s reign ("Down in the Ghetto," 2002), Fay-Ann Lyons' 2009 sweep ("Meet Super Blue") and Voice's three straight wins (2016–2018) mark its eras, with Ultimate Rejects' 2017 "Full Extreme" among its most celebrated winners. The event's prestige and prize money made "Monarch songs" a recognizable compositional style across the region.
