Soca is high-energy carnival music from Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, built from calypso, Indian rhythmic influence, brass, synthesizers, call-and-response hooks and road-march momentum. It is designed for bodies in motion: fetes, mas bands, trucks, flags, jumps, wine and collective release. Modern soca splits into power soca, groovy soca, ragga soca and hybrid festival-pop forms.

History

Lord Shorty, later Ras Shorty I, developed soca from calypso and Indo-Trinidadian rhythmic ideas in the 1970s, with "Indrani" and "Endless Vibrations" marking early breakthroughs. Arrow, Super Blue, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Destra, Bunji Garlin, Patrice Roberts and Kes expanded the sound regionally and globally. Soca now functions as a yearly carnival engine as much as a recording genre.
