Smooth West Coast Rap is the laid-back, melodic side of West Coast hip-hop: rolling bass, clean funk samples, talkbox, synth leads, lowrider tempo, warm chords and flows that sit behind the beat rather than attacking it. It can still be streetwise, but the sound is sunlit and cruising. The style's power is ease: hard stories delivered over grooves that make the car feel like the proper listening room.

History

West Coast rap drew from P-Funk, electro, funk, soul and lowrider culture, then G-funk made smooth production a global signature through Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dogg, DJ Quik, Too Short and Tha Dogg Pound. Later artists such as Dom Kennedy, YG, Kendrick Lamar, Larry June and Blxst revived or updated the relaxed West Coast feel. Smooth West Coast rap persists because groove is part of the region's identity.
