Smooth Soul Adult Contemporary adds silkier grooves, deeper bass, and gospel-bred vocal finesse to AC’s polished ballad language. Drum machines or restrained live rhythm sections, electric piano, saxophone, and softly luxurious synth textures are common, and the mood is bedroom-soft rather than dramatic.

History

It emerged where quiet-storm R&B met adult radio, building on Stevie Wonder’s mellow side and becoming fully codified in the 1980s when Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, Sade, Peabo Bryson, and later Toni Braxton or Babyface made adult soul records with crossover elegance; the subgenre became a hugely important bridge between Black radio, pop radio, and upscale romantic branding, and it later fed urban AC, smooth jazz vocals, and prestige adult R&B.
