History
The style matured in the mid-to-late 1970s through Los Angeles session culture, AOR radio, and artists who blended rock songwriting with R&B, jazz, and studio perfectionism. Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Toto, Christopher Cross, Player, Michael McDonald, Ambrosia, Pages, The Doobie Brothers, and Kenny Loggins define its most polished lane. Smooth Rock fed yacht rock, adult contemporary, West Coast AOR, blue-eyed soul soft rock, and later revivals that celebrate elite musicianship and frictionless production.
