Smooth Fusion
Smooth fusion polishes fusion’s harmonic and electric language into melodic, listener-friendly forms with impeccable production, lyrical guitar or keyboard leads, and controlled groove. It maintains fusion’s musicianship and color but sands down the jagged edges; technically formidable, sonically moisturized.
History
This lane emerged as the harsher early fusion sound gave way to polished 1970s and 1980s studio craft. George Benson, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Yellowjackets, Spyro Gyra, and allied acts helped connect fusion to contemporary jazz markets without entirely abandoning improvisation. The style is historically crucial because it links classic fusion to smooth jazz and adult-instrumental radio, becoming one of the most commercially durable electric-jazz branches.
