Doom's crawl welded to hardcore punk's filth: viciously downtuned guitars buried in feedback, lurching tempos that occasionally erupt into d-beat fury, and screamed, throat-shredded vocals. Production is deliberately grimy and abrasive, riffs detuned and dissonant, lyrics steeped in addiction, misery and rot. Ugly, heavy, and proud of it.
History
Crystallized around 1991 with New Orleans' Eyehategod, whose feedback-soaked nihilism and 1993 Take as Needed for Pain set the template, alongside North Carolina's Buzzov-en. Drawing on Melvins' grinding slowness and Black Flag's My War, the style fused metal weight with punk squalor, seeding the broader NOLA and Southern sludge movements through the 1990s.
