Sleep Piano is spare, repetitive, and extra low in dynamic range, usually using lullaby-like intervals, gently cycling harmony, and long silences between gestures. It is less expressive and less goal-oriented than concert piano, favoring drowsiness over drama.
History
Although bedtime piano is much older, sleep-specific piano solidified as a distinct streaming and app-era category, drawing from New Age piano, ambient piano, and Max Richter’s all-night SLEEP ecosystem; Chad Lawson, Joep Beving, Yiruma, Peter Kater, Helen Jane Long, and Richter-adjacent calm composers shaped the form into something both musically coherent and functionally soporific.
