Slack-Key Guitar

Slack-key guitar uses open tunings and fingerstyle patterns to create singing bass lines, chiming treble melodies, and rolling, unforced rhythmic grace. The music feels relaxed in the literal sense—strings are slackened, posture softens, melody blooms—but the best players have astonishing internal precision beneath the hammock-level calm.
History
The tradition developed in Hawaiʻi after the introduction of the guitar, becoming a localized solo and family style with distinctive tunings and regional repertoires. Modern recognition owes much to Gabby Pahinui and later players such as Raymond Kāne, Sonny Chillingworth, Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Kaapana, and Keola Beamer, who brought formerly home-based practice into recordings and concert circulation.
