Skacore is ska-punk pushed into hardcore territory: frantic offbeats, shouted vocals, horn blasts, breakdowns, sudden tempo switches and lyrics that can be political, chaotic or bleak. It is heavier and less radio-friendly than third-wave ska, often using ska sections as launchpads for hardcore speed. The contrast is the hook: bright skanking rhythm crashes into distortion, screaming and pit movement.
History
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones helped define the early ska-core label, while Voodoo Glow Skulls, Choking Victim, Leftöver Crack, Link 80, Against All Authority, Capdown and The Suicide Machines made harder, faster versions. The style thrived in DIY punk circuits where ska's dance rhythm could coexist with crust, hardcore and political punk. It never became as mainstream as poppier ska-punk, but it kept ska connected to punk's confrontational edge.
