Ska-Punk is punk rock with ska's offbeat engine: choppy upstroke guitar, horn hooks, walking bass, fast drums, shout-along choruses and a constant switch between bounce and acceleration. It can be political, goofy, heartfelt or radio-polished, but its basic pleasure is kinetic. Compared with Two-Tone it is usually faster and more distorted; compared with pop-punk it has more syncopation and horn-led arrangement.
History
Operation Ivy's short run gave the style its punk blueprint, combining East Bay hardcore energy with ska rhythm and social lyrics. Fishbone, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rancid, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, The Suicide Machines and Streetlight Manifesto expanded the vocabulary across funk, hardcore, pop-punk and big-band horn writing. The 1990s boom made ska-punk a mainstream alternative sound, but underground scenes kept it alive after radio moved on.
