Auteur-driven rock where one writer's voice and acoustic-or-piano songcraft leads a full band. Confessional, melodically rich lyrics ride warm rhythm sections, tasteful electric coloring, and unhurried arrangements. The song and the personal narrative come first; the band serves the words rather than the riff.
History
Emerged from the early-70s Laurel Canyon and California scene as folk-rooted writers fronted polished rock backing. James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Carole King turned introspection into a commercial format; the style fed adult-album-radio and softer rock for decades. It remains the backbone of literate, performer-as-author rock craft.
