History
Before rock dominated popular song, show tunes were a central engine of mainstream repertoire, feeding Broadway, Hollywood, radio, cast albums, and eventually the Great American Songbook; material from Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Porter, Bernstein, Loesser, Herman, Sondheim, and others made the category both a commercial mainstream and a training ground for performers.
